His father died in a car accident in November 1964, the result of the vehicle colliding with a drunk driver when Allen was eleven years old.

Two years after that, his mother married her high school sweetheart, a business executive, and relocated to Birmingham, Michigan, together with her six children to live with her new husband and his three children. Allen has stated that the move meant going from “being in a cool group at one school to being at the bottom of the social hierarchy at another.” Allen went to Seaholm High School in Birmingham, where he took courses in theater and music (which is the reason he developed a love for classical piano).

He then went to Central Michigan University before moving to Western Michigan University in 1974. While at Western Michigan University, Allen worked at the student radio station WIDR. He was released on parole on June 12, 1981, having served two years and four months at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone, Minnesota.

In 1997 Allen was caught for driving under the influence in Birmingham, Michigan; at that time his blood alcohol level was 0.15%, which was almost twice the legal limit in Michigan. He was given a one-year probation sentence and went into an alcohol rehabilitation clinic in 1998 as part of the terms of his court order. Political views Allen is a supporter of the Republican Party and describes himself as “fiscally conservative and emotionally liberal”; he has referred to himself both on the TV show Last Man Standing and in real life as a libertarian.
