HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE: START BY LEARNING A DIGITAL SKILL
The internet has changed the way we work, do business and even make a living.
Today, billions of people use the internet, while businesses are increasingly using digital platforms to find customers, market their products and sell their services.
So, if the world is changing, shouldn’t we change with it?
One thing I’ve come to realize is that being online is not enough. You need a skill you can use online.
One of the areas worth exploring is Digital Marketing.
Digital marketing simply involves using digital channels such as social media, search engines, websites, email and other online platforms to promote products, services or brands. (British Council)
And here’s the interesting part:
Digital marketing is not just one skill.
There are different areas you can explore depending on your interests and goals, such as:
- Social Media Marketing
- Affiliate Marketing
- Content Marketing
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Email Marketing
- Paid Advertising
- Influencer Marketing
- Lead Generation
- And more.
For example, in affiliate marketing, you can promote products or services offered by another business and earn a commission when your marketing generates a qualifying sale or action. (Wikipedia)
With social media marketing, you can help businesses build their online presence, create content, engage their audience and attract potential customers.
With paid advertising, you can learn how businesses use platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Google to reach specific audiences.
The point is not to learn everything at once.
Pick one area. Learn it properly. Practice it. Build experience. Then look for ways to monetize the skill.
You don’t necessarily need to wait until you get your dream job before developing a skill that can open another opportunity for you.
If you’re a student, graduate, NYSC member, job seeker or even someone already working a 9–5 and looking for an additional skill, learning a digital skill could be something worth exploring.
But please don’t fall for every “make money online” promise you see.
There is no magic button.
Learning the skill is only the beginning. You still have to practice, understand your market, create value, find opportunities and stay consistent.
The internet is not going away. Businesses are not going offline.
The question is:
