Both are structural design patterns. Both introduce an intermediary but they solve fundamentally different problems.
FACADE = SIMPLIFY
Imagine an investment platform that requires KYC verification, document validation, payment processing, and notifications. Instead of forcing the client to coordinate every service, a Facade provides one simple entry point. The goal? Hide complexity and simplify access.
ADAPTER = TRANSLATE
Your application expects IPaymentGateway.Pay(), but a third-party provider exposes a different interface. An Adapter translates between them, allowing your application to use the provider without rewriting its code. The goal? Make incompatible interfaces work together.
Can they work together? Absolutely!
A Facade can orchestrate your investment workflow, while Adapters handle integrations with Paystack, Flutterwave, or other providers.
Remember:
Facade asks: How do I simplify this complex subsystem?
Adapter asks: How do I make these incompatible interfaces work together?
Have you ever seen a developer use a Facade when an Adapter was needed or mistake an Adapter for a Facade? What was the design problem?
