A Nigerian man has alleged that the January 16, 2027, election date could put NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and Igbo voters at a disadvantage, claiming that many people from the South-East may struggle to participate fully in the polls. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man questioned the timing of the election, suggesting that it could affect voters who travel to their hometowns during the Christmas period.
According to him, many Igbo people who registered to vote in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country often travel home for Christmas, weddings, burials and other family events. He argued that some of these voters might not return to their registered polling units in time for the election, potentially affecting their participation. “They fixed the presidential election for January 16 because they know that Igbo people will still be at home for Christmas and may not be able to participate fully in the elections,” he claimed.
The man further alleged that the timing was deliberate and intended to prevent Peter Obi from benefiting fully from his supporters’ votes. “They did this intentionally to ensure the election does not favour Peter Obi,” he added. His comment comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
However, the man’s claim that the date was deliberately chosen to disadvantage Obi and Igbo voters remains an allegation.
