The historical record provides remarkable context: Islam did not begin in the capital of a powerful empire - Muhammad began his mission in seventh-century Makkah without an army or political institution, preaching pure monotheism in a society attached to tribal practices; he and his followers endured ridicule and persecution, yet the message survived.

After the Hijrah to Madinah the community became organised, and within a remarkably short period Islam confronted and defeated territories of the Byzantine and Sasanian empires, spreading across the Middle East, North Africa, Persia and beyond. The Qur'an had already announced the outcome. Consider the circumstances: one man, a remote society, intense opposition, persecution, a message that survived its founder, expanded with extraordinary speed, crossed ethnic and geographical boundaries and became a civilisation spanning continents - all consistent with the Qur'an's repeated declaration (61:9; 9:33; 48:28).

Psalm 46:10; Proverbs 18:1; Proverbs 6:20-22 ("when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee") - every meaningful inventor or discoverer got ideas by stillness and meditation (Newton under the apple tree; Einstein's thought experiments riding a beam of light).

Accessing the mind of the Spirit requires stillness and meditation in the word day and night, as God told Joshua; only your spirit knows the things of the spirit (1 Corinthians 2:11). "Do not hoard knowledge, propagate it. Jesus is Lord."

Others say, "Prayer does not change GOD. Prayer brings us into agreement with HIS will."

But what does the scripture actually reveal? Did Abraham's prayer change GOD's decision concerning Sodom? Did Moses change GOD's mind when he interceded for Israel? Did Hezekiah's prayer alter what had already been spoken concerning his death?

Did Jonah's preaching cause Nineveh to experience a different outcome? And if GOD ALMIGHTIEST is omniscient, knowing the end from the beginning, what does it actually mean when scripture speaks of GOD "repenting," "relenting," or changing a declared course of action?

There is another question that goes even deeper: if GOD has already determined the outcome, was the prayer itself already part of HIS divine purpose?

And what about CHRIST JESUS? When HE prayed in Gethsemane, "Not MY will, but THINE, be done," was HE attempting to change the Father's decision, or was HE submitting to the will that had already been established? So let us settle this properly: does prayer change GOD'S mind, or does prayer accomplish what GOD has already purposed through the prayers of HIS people?

No assumptions. No denominational arguments. No emotional conclusions. Bring the SCRIPTURE.

What can they cause? (1) Lateness in marriage; (2) financial losses; (3) looking older than your age; (4) always having failed relationships; (5) being easily dumped in a relationship; (6) defilements, strong urge for masturbation etc; (7) barrenness and fertility issues; (8) near-success syndrome. The Prophet (SAW) taught us a beautiful du'a to say when we stop at a place: "A'udhu bikalimatillahi tammati min sharri ma khalaq" - "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created." The Prophet said: "Whoever stops at a place and says it, nothing will harm him until he departs from that place" (Sahih Muslim).

In saying it we admit: "Ya Allah, I do not know everything that surrounds me, but You do; I cannot protect myself from everything, but You can."

So make it a habit: when you arrive at a new city, check into a hotel, stay in a new house, or stop somewhere during a journey, say it - and teach your children to say it too.

The believer does not merely prepare his luggage for a journey; he prepares his tongue with dhikr and his heart with tawakkul. May Allah protect us wherever we go, seen and unseen.
