Today, private jets are often associated with Nigeria's wealthiest businessmen, politicians and celebrities. But decades before private jets became a familiar symbol of wealth in Nigeria, one Nigerian had already entered this exclusive world. His name was Chief Godfrey Kio Jaja Amachree, popularly known as G.K.J. Amachree. Several Nigerian historical accounts identify Amachree as the first Nigerian to own a private jet - one account records that he acquired his own aircraft in New York in 1966.
Who was G.K.J. Amachree? Born in 1918 in Buguma, in present-day Rivers State, Amachree became one of Nigeria's most distinguished lawyers and public servants. [Portrait attached]
