Benue DPO Killed In Herders Ambush As Gunmen Kill Two Policemen

A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and two other policemen have reportedly been killed following an ambush by suspected armed herders in Benue State. The attack occurred while the officers were carrying out official duties in an area affected by recurring security challenges. Reports indicate that the policemen were attacked by heavily armed assailants, leading to the deaths of the officers.

The incident has added to growing concerns over insecurity in Benue, a state that has experienced repeated attacks linked to armed groups, banditry and violent clashes in recent years. Security sources said efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible for the ambush, while additional security personnel have reportedly been deployed to the area. Benue, often referred to as Nigeria's food basket, has witnessed numerous deadly attacks over the years, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of residents and disruption of farming activities.

Studies have also linked insecurity in the state to declining agricultural output and economic hardship for affected communities. Residents and community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security measures. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide more details.
