On the 15th and 16th of Sept., 2026, an operation was carried out by the #NSCDC in Niger state which led to the arrest of approximately 70 illegal miners.
48 hours later, 37 of them were found dead, This has resulted to public outcry, protest, vandalization and curfew imposed by the state government.
The statement issued by the spoke person of NSCDC stated that the cause of death was a result of an undisclosed outbreak of disease. This incident has led to the arrest of more than 20 officers of the NSCDC and the suspension of the head of Niger state branch of NSCDC
