Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar said the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the clerics, who were all identified as Imams, and drove them into the bush; security teams were combing the surrounding forests.

Some early reports linked the incident to a prayer gathering at the Talata Mafara residence of former governor and Senator Abdul'aziz Yari, suggesting five or six clerics were taken from the venue; however, the Nigerian Army refuted claims that the abduction occurred at Yari's residence, saying intelligence indicated the victims were abducted while travelling from the Sububu forest axis within Bakura LGA en route to Talata Mafara.

Conflicting local accounts over identities: police maintain all six were Imams, while the Talata Mafara LGA chairman and some relatives insist only one deputy Imam was among the abducted, with the others being petrol marketers. Police said the suspects allegedly contacted the victim's brother and demanded R4,000 in exchange for his release.

The victim's brother alerted police, who tracked the driver's vehicle using its tracking system. Officers eventually located and rescued him in Heathfield. SAPS said the victim told police that he had been sexually assaulted by two female suspects while being held by the group.

Five people were arrested in connection with the incident: two women aged 23 and 34, and three men aged 16, 42 and 48.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday, September 14, to face charges relating to the alleged kidnapping, rape and ransom demand. The allegations have not been tested in court, and the suspects remain innocent unless proven guilty. Source: hostelite.ng
